Edcouch-Elsa ISD Celebrates Barber, Iris Lopez, and Her Dedication to Mentoring Students in the Art of Barbering
Edcouch, TX – October 12, 2023 – Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District (EEISD) is proud to announce the remarkable achievements of Iris Lopez, a dedicated cosmetologist, and barber. Ms. Lopez, received a cosmetology certification 22 years ago, recently completed her training at barber school this summer. She finds the world of barbering more challenging than working with female hair, yet she passionately mentors her students, fostering an environment of learning, encouragement, and mutual support. This is her first year as a CTE teacher and her first year working with an amazing group of barbers.
Ms. Lopez’s passion lies in seeing her students help one another, "I want for them to succeed and have their dreams of having their own barber shops," she shared. Having worked in various schools, Ms. Lopez has witnessed firsthand how haircuts can significantly boost self-esteem. She takes pride in how her students are not only honing their skills but also positively impacting the self-esteem of others, transforming lives one haircut at a time.
In the state of Texas, becoming a licensed barber requires extensive training, approximately 1,000 hours, and a deep commitment to the craft. EEHS 12th grader, Jeremiah Cantu, is a shining example of determination and ambition. He is currently preparing to take his Barber certification exam in mid-November with a dream of opening his own barber shop, aptly named JereCutz. Jeremiah attributes his success and newfound passion to Ms. Lopez, expressing his gratitude for her unwavering belief in him since day one.
Another aspiring barber, Leobardo Flores, a senior at EEHS, emphasizes the importance of consistency and patience in mastering the art of haircuts, fades, and designs. Under Ms. Lopez’s guidance, Leobardo and his peers are developing essential skills that will serve them well in their future careers.
EEISD commends Ms. Iris Lopez for her dedication to her students and congratulates Jeremiah Cantu, Leobardo Flores, and all the students under her guidance for their hard work and determination. Their stories inspire the entire community and showcase the power of education, mentorship, and self-belief.
