EEISD's Carlos F. Truan Jr. High Celebrates Dia de los Muertos with Inspiring Student Displays
Edcouch, Texas - November 3, 2023 – Carlos F. Truan Jr. High School is proud to announce its vibrant and culturally enriching Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) display.
Dia de los Muertos, a traditional Mexican celebration, is a time-honored observance where families come together to remember and honor their loved ones who have passed away. At Carlos F. Truan Jr. High School, this meaningful holiday has been brought to life through the creativity of Spanish students, some of which are part of Angelica Martinez’s 7th grade Spanish 1 class.
Having a decade of experience in the field of education, Ms. Martinez, in her inaugural year at Edcouch-Elsa ISD, has not only found a welcoming community but has also fostered an engaging and inclusive learning environment for her students. Ms. Martinez expressed, "I felt immediately welcomed by the students, teachers, and the community. This unit is one of my favorites to cover in my class because it opens up channels of communication about who our ancestors were and who we are."
One of the highlights of the Dia de los Muertos celebration at Carlos F. Truan Jr. High School is the creation of ofrendas or offerings by the students. Jayson Oranday, a 7th grader, shared his enthusiasm about the experience, stating, "This was a great experience for me. I had such a fun time in this class and enjoyed learning about my great-grandparents while making my ofrenda."
The students' ofrendas serve as a heartfelt tribute to their departed loved ones, showcasing the depth of their understanding and respect for this cultural tradition. Alyssa Balboa, another 7th grader, expressed her sentiments, saying, "My ofrenda was all about my uncle and honoring him. Since we do this in my family and it's already very special for me, sharing it here at school makes it even more meaningful."
The Dia de los Muertos display at Carlos F. Truan Jr. High School not only celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the community but also promotes understanding, empathy, and unity among students. Through this immersive experience, students have not only learned about their own roots but have also forged connections with their peers, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared cultural pride.
