Edcouch-Elsa ISD Enhances Campus Safety with Metal Detectors

Elsa, Texas – January 10, 2025 – Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District is proud to announce the implementation of enhanced safety measures at its campuses, including the installation of metal detectors. This proactive step underscores the district’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors.

On Wednesday, a portable walk-through metal detector was installed at John F. Kennedy Elementary, located at the main entrance. This addition serves as a visible deterrent and an effective tool for identifying potential threats, reinforcing the district’s dedication to providing a safe learning environment.

“Our priority is the well-being of every student and staff member,” said Dr. Alda T. Benavides, Superintendent of Edcouch-Elsa ISD. “By integrating metal detectors, we are taking an important step to create an environment where students and staff feel safe and secure and are focused on learning.”

The metal detector at John F. Kennedy Elementary is the first of several planned across the district. These efforts align with Edcouch-Elsa ISD’s comprehensive safety strategy, which includes:

•Regular safety drills and training for students and staff.

•Enhanced visitor management systems to monitor campus access.

Parents, staff, and community members are encouraged to partner with the district in maintaining a safe and welcoming educational environment.

“The metal detector helps with our security…if there’s a stranger it helps our security [Guardian] help us,” Sebastian Garza, a 2nd grader at John F. Kennedy Elementary shared.

“It’s so important to be safe and secure- the efforts that EEISD is doing is great. There needs to be protocol and my favorite part of this is the raptor system and we can use it silently and we get to cross reference with each other. It’s great to see metal detectors because my prior district didn’t have them, Elizabeth Garza, a 1st grade teacher at John F. Kennedy shared.”
